~ H stands for Hard, and it shows hardness. ~ B stands for Black, and it shows softness. So hardness of graphite pencil is discussed below.īefore moving to the hardness of pencil, we must know the followings: We use graphite pencils for drawing and drafting. E.g., 2B Pencil, 4B Pencil, 6B Pencil, etc. They are beneficial for the artwork of various kinds. ✔ Soft Pencils are too soft to be used in mechanical drafting. ✔ Medium Pencils are used for general purpose work in drawing. E.g., 2H pencil, 4H pencil, 6H pencil, etc. ✔ Hard Pencils are used where extreme accuracy is required especially working on graphs, diagrams and charts. ✔ The grade of a drawing pencil depends on the type of work. ✔ For drafting, graphite pencil is commonly used. Low quality pencils also contain more fillers (wax and/or clay) and the differences between grades are not as pronounced.Drawing pencil is an essential tool in drawing as it is used for making drawings on paper. Low Quality Lead: If graphite is not ground finely enough, or contains impurities (such as bits of ground rock from the mining process), it can have a coarse, scratchy feeling against the paper, and may even scuff or mar the paper's surface, leaving rough gouges and making erasing near to impossible.High quality leads should erase (at least most of the way).
